Sambucus canadensis
Looking for a fast-growing shrub that produces edible fruit? Look no further than Sambucus canadensis, also known as American Elder or Common Elder.
This deciduous shrub can reach heights of 4 meters and produces clusters of dark purple to black berries, which can be used for pies, jams, jellies, sauces, and more. The flowers are also edible and can be used in fritters or as a tea.
In addition to its culinary uses, Sambucus canadensis has medicinal properties and can be used as a diuretic, laxative, and anti-inflammatory. The leaves and inner bark can also be used as an insecticide and a dye. Sambucus canadensis is a hardy plant that can tolerate most soils and can grow in semi-shade or full sun. It is an excellent choice for naturalized areas, shrub borders, roadside plantings, or wet or low areas.
